It's been nearly twenty years since we last entered the world of Azeroth in an official TTRPG and now Wizards of the Coast are doing this one themselves, with the first book under the Universes Beyond banner they've carried over from Magic. Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft lets you build, adventure, and immerse yourself into the intricate lore from Blizzard's 32-year-old fantasy setting.

The new book lands in November, preorders are live on the site now, and there's plenty in the book to get excited about.

1. Build your Main with All New Warcraft Species and Classes

The book releases with sixteen playable character species, five of which are five standard D&D species remapped to fit Warcraft, and the other eleven being new to D&D.

The draconic race of the Dracthyr, the cosmic survivors of the Draenei, the stoney dwarven constructs of the Earthen, the free-willed undead of the Forsaken, the bat-transforming and elven-troll-like people of the Haranir, the short-statured robotic Mechagnome, the noble and secretive Pandaren, the bullish (literally) Tauren, the mystical and regenartive Troll, the nomadic fox-people of the Vulpera and the lycanthropy-afflicted Worgen.

All thirteen WoW classes are coming to D&D as well, with over forty specialisations behind them to better craft the exact warcraft character that speaks to you.

If you've had the same Vulpera rogue since Battle for Azeroth and you've been quietly reflavouring a halfling every time you sit down at a D&D table, worry no more.

2. The Subclasses

Sitting on top of the new species and class options, are six new subclasses: Oath of the Ebon Blade and Oath of the Holy for Paladin, the Demon Hunter for Ranger, the Shadow Domain and Discipline Domain for Cleric, and the Path of the Elements for Barbarian. Finally, you can throw out your homebrewed Death Knight and start running an official build.

In addition to the new subclasses, a few others have received an official update. Swashbuckler Rogue, Path of the Spiritual Guardian Barbarian and Warrior of Mystic Brews Monk (previously the Drunken Master) are all being brought up to the 2024 ruleset.

3. The Dungeons

Want to hit Azjol-Nerub with your party members again but this time, bring it crashing down around Anub'arak? Well it and six other dungeons have been built in D&D for you to raid, loot, and roll for those boots that increase your strength by just one more but hey, they're better than your current boots anyway.

You'll find Azjol-Nerub, Blackfathom Deeps, Deadmines, Dire Maul, Onyxia’s Lair, Scarlet Monastery, and Shadowfang Keep ready and waiting for you and your friends, provided you can get hold of an adequete healer or tank.

4. Stat Blocks Galore

Fifty-plus new monsters, sixty-plus new spells, and thirty stat blocks written specifically for dungeon bosses. This is the most comprehensive book for D&D since the 2024 rules update.

In fact, the point of this book is to be mostly standalone. While a Player's Handbook is helpful, you should be able to play a World of Warcraft D&D campaign with just this book, and the Source Reference Document available from the DnD Beyond website.

5. Mounts, Professions And Renown

Ride your ram into battle, tame the right creature, become an artisan blacksmith, and build renown with Azeroth's factions to reap rewards. All the little things that go into running a character from World of Warcraft is available in the book.

In fact, Profession is a brand-new mechanic to D&D that allows you to customize your hero between quests, turning downtime into a space to craft gear, tinker on trinkets, and prep upgrades in a more mechanically structure way than the nebulous "I craft this thing" rules present in the game currently.

If you've also spent an hour or two completing your reputation dailies, you'll be happy to know you can do it all again. The Renown mechanics from the Dungeon Master's Guide are built upon for World of Warcraft's faction reputation. Each faction tracks your reputation and pays out as it grows. Grind your rep with a smaller group for a quick favor, or pledge to one banner and rise through the ranks for bigger and better rewards!

6. The Cast

It wouldn't be a real World of Warcraft experience without Iconic World of Warcraft characters appearing throughout, sometimes as allies and sometimes as the problem.

If you're looking to bring down Arthas in Northrend, there's a specifc Icecrown Citadel Map Pack that provides five double-sided poster maps and a complete digital adventure that carries you and your party from the Lower Spire to the Frozen Throne itself.
